(Lane, Lexicon, 666).

Arberry)

«Paradise: the ḥūr»).

Kāshānī, Tafsīr, ad Q 2:25).
|Ḥourī (1,646 words)

Ḥourīs are the virgins of Paradise promised to believers in the afterlife. The English word «houri» is derived from the Persian ḥūrī via French, which ultimately comes from the Arabic noun ḥūriyya. The Arabic word ḥūr is the plural of the adjective ḥawrāʾ (fem.)/aḥwar (masc.), which denotes a general sense of «whiteness.» The term is used to describe the eye of a gazelle or oryx as it contrasts with the vivid blackness of its pupil, exemplified in the expression ḥūr al-ʿīn, "having eyes like those of gazelles and of cows, " which is often applied to women (Lane, Lexicon, 666).

The word ḥūr is used four times in the Qurʾān, three of which appear in the combination ḥūr ʿīn (the construction ḥūr al-ʿīn is not Quranic). All are embedded in descriptions of Paradise. Q 44:54 and 52:20 state "We will marry them (zawwajnāhum) with ḥūr ʿīn, " while Q 56:22-3 lists ḥūr ʿīn as being among the rewards of Paradise, along with food and drink, and describes them as being «like hidden pearls.» Q 55:70-2 specifically associates the ḥūr and women: fīhinna khayrāt ḥisān, «therein maidens good and comely … ḥourīs cloistered in cool pavilions.» (trans. Arberry)

Such passages have been read in combination with other descriptions of the joys of Paradise within the Qurʾān in order to add some degree of clarity to the nature of the ḥūr ʿīn. For example, Q 56:35-8 states «Perfectly We formed them [feminine], perfect, and We made them spotless virgins (jaʿalnāhunna abkār), chastely amorous, like of an age for the Companions of the Right» (Arberry) in which the «them» is understood as being the ḥourīs. Q 38:52 says that these beings are «like-aged maidens restraining their gaze» (qāṣirāt al-ṭarf atrāb) and 37:48 has it as qāṣirāt al-ṭarf ʿīn («large-eyed maidens restraining their gaze»); 55:56 adds that «no human or jinn has touched them previously.» Q 78:33 describes the reward as kawāʿib atrāb, usually understood as «like-aged, large-breasted maidens.»

The picture of Paradise was developed in its details early on in Islamic literature and the heavenly maidens were an integral part of the description. The earliest sīra texts place the ḥourīs in a nursing role within battle scenes, providing a glimpse of the comfort and rewards to those injured and killed while fighting (Ibn Isḥāq II 24, 177, 345; Guillaume 349, 430, 519; also see Jarrar on the jihād text of Ibn al-Mubārak, d. 181/797). According to the miʿrāj narratives a vision of the ḥourīs was given to Muḥammad (although this does not appear in Ibn Isḥāq’s account), in which their playfulness and companionship is emphasised. It is within the ḥadīth that there are expanded references to ḥourīs and their sensual nature begins to be emphasised (Wensinck, Handbook, s.v. «Paradise: the ḥūr»). The delicateness of their flesh to the point of transparency is frequently elaborated (e.g., al-Bukhārī, K. Badʾ al-khalq, bāb mā jāʾa fī ṣifat al-janna: «the marrow of their leg bones will be seen through the flesh») and the implications of their purity is emphasised such that normal (female) bodily functions (including ageing) do not occur. The idea of a reward of 72 wives from among the ḥourīs also appears (al-Tirmidhī, K. Ṣifat al-janna, #2760: "The smallest reward for someone in Paradise is 80,000 servants and 72 wives, " although this is specifically for martyrs; K. Faḍāʾil al-jihād, #1662), but later elaborations provide other figures ranging into the thousands. Subsequent works devoted to the afterlife (surveyed by Rustomji, The garden and the fire, 99-100, 111-15; Bouhdiba, 72-87; as an example see al-Ghazālī, IV 524-7) collate, integrate, and elaborate these elements and provide a cohesive picture of the afterlife and the characteristics of Paradise.

The ḥourīs feature as an element in the Christian critique of Islam from the very beginning, as the sensual and sexual nature of the Islamic Paradise was in general suggested as unseemly. For example, Theodore Abū Qurra (d. after 201/816), in his purported debate with the caliph al-Maʾmūn, sarcastically raised the issue of the eschatological reward for Muslim women if their husbands are promised ḥourīs in Paradise (Mujādalāt Abī Qurra, 77, 109). For others it was a simple observation that such delights in the hereafter were wholly inappropriate to a spiritual religion (Daniel, 172-6).

The ḥourīs have also attracted substantial scholarly attention. While early Arabic poetry incorporated the figures extensively, which has been taken by some as an indication of a native Arabic origin for the image (Horovitz, Wendell), their relationship to Christian imagery has proven both fascinating and contentious. It is the absence of these figures—indeed, the complete denial of sexuality in the hereafter—in Christianity’s vision of an otherwise very real Paradise that led to speculation over the origin of the image of these maidens. While Zoroastrianism (Berthels, Jeffery), Judaism (Künstlinger), and misunderstood Christian images of angels (Wensinck) have been postulated as their basis, more attention has been paid to Syriac Christianity, especially in connection with the imagery of the bridal chamber in the Hymns on Paradise of Saint Ephrem (d. 373) (Andrae; rejected in Beck; van Reeth). The theory of the pseudonymous Luxenberg, which has received much popular attention, is that ḥūr ʿīn should be understood as meaning «crystal (clear) white (grapes)» on the basis of a mixed Aramaic etymology and a rewritten Quranic text; this postulate has not, however, withstood scholarly critiques (Wild, Saleh). The image of the frustrated martyr not being greeted by his expected virgins as a reward and receiving only grapes has, however, become firmly established in popular imagination (Rustomji, «American visions»).

Given the prominence in contemporary discussions, both scholarly and popular, of women in Islam, the ḥourīs have also received attention because of what the traditional picture may suggest about male attitudes to women, and the «culturally specific limitations» of the «mythological depictions… of the ideal female» (Wadud, 55). In such contexts, the Quranic descriptions tend to be read as non-specific in terms of gender, such that the emphasis becomes «partnering» with a mate rather than a man being married to a ḥourī. The historicising of the ḥūr ʿīn passages is also common, with the remark (Wadud, 55) that their occurrence being limited to Meccan passages of the Qurʾān indicates that the cultural limitations of the environment of that city were recognised as the Muslim community developed. Ṣūfī-influenced interpretations, seeing the ḥourīs as metaphorical, are also popular; in such views, they are spouses for the soul (as a classical interpretation see, for example, Kāshānī, Tafsīr, ad Q 2:25).

== Encyclopaedia Islamica / Ḥūr al-ʿĪn or Ḥūr ʿīn ==

{{refbegin32|
Ḥūr al-ʿĪn or Ḥūr ʿīn (‘Houris, wide-eyed maidens’), a Qurʾānic expression for the maidens of paradise, whose presence is one of the divine blessings bestowed upon the inhabitants of paradise as a reward for their good deeds. Descriptions of the Ḥūr al-ʿĪn specifically emphasise the aesthetic attractions of paradise, and elaborations about them in the extra-Qurʾānic ḥadīth literature serve to further emphasise the physical pleasures of paradise.

The first part of this compound name, the word ‘Ḥūr’, is the plural form of hawrāʾ or aḥwar, meaning to be white or pale, and therefore pure; while the second part, ‘ʿĪn,’ is the plural form of aʿyan, meaning one with beautiful wide eyes and large black pupils (Rāghib, 262, 599–600; Ibn Manẓūr, 3196–3197; Lane, 669, 2270; Abdel Haleem, 109). Many authorities therefore comment on the way that the two words express the contrast of opposites, white and black, in the eye, considered a sign of great beauty as seen in the gazelle or the cow (see al-Fīrūzābādī, 1/15–16 and 4/252–253; al-Bursawī, 5/519; see Nasr, 2204, where the phrase is translated as ‘wide-eyed maidens’). Western scholars have generally maintained that even if the word is used in pre-Islamic poetry as an expression for white-skinned women, the conception of ḥūr in relation to paradise seems to have been borrowed from external sources: the German philologist Martin Haug (d. 1876) thought this came from Zoroastrian teachings on good thought (humata), good speech (hūxta) and good deeds (huvarshta) through which the soul ascends to paradise, while others comment on its probable Pahlavi root, ḥurust, meaning ‘beautiful’ (Jeffery, 117–119; see also Mashkūr, 1/200–201; Boyce, 12/561–562; Gesenius, 301); some have argued that the roots of the expression lie in Syriac, and that its actual meaning is ‘white grapes’ (Karīmī Niyā, 54–55).

The Qurʾān uses the expression ‘Ḥūr ʿīn’ on three occasions to refer to the maidens of paradise (Q 44:54, 52:20 and 56:23). However, the words ḥūr and ʿīn also appear individually in the Qurʾān with very similar meanings to the ones they possess in combination. For example, ḥūr appears in Q 55:72 to refer to people veiled from other people’s sight, while the word ʿīn appears in Q 37:48 in reference to ‘women of restrained glances (qāṣirāt al-ṭarf) with wide eyes (ʿīn)’. These verses of the Qurʾān, then, imply that these Ḥūr al-ʿĪn or ‘heavenly maidens’ are one of the enjoyable sights of paradise (Q 54:44, 52:20, 55:70, 72); they are compared to rubies and coral (55:58) and marble (56:23), they are secluded behind veils from the sight of others (55:72), and no one else has touched them (55:74). They are companions to the inhabitants of paradise, and recline on green pillows and beautiful rugs (55:76).

However, there are also verses of the Qurʾān which allude to their existence in paradise without explicitly invoking the name ‘Ḥūr al-ʿĪn.’ For example, some verses refer to them as ‘[females] of restrained glances’ (qāṣirāt al-ṭarf, see Q 37:48, 38:52, 55:56), while others call them ‘pure spouses’ (azwāj muṭahhara, see 2:25, 3:15, 4:57). The ḥadīth literature expands on the Qurʾānic idea in the context of urging the faithful to action, for example by undertaking jihād. According to some narrations, those who wage jihād and are martyred will find themselves immediately amongst the Ḥūr al-ʿĪn (Ibn Mubārak, 70–71; al-Shaybānī, 1/8, 24; Ibn Abī Shayba, 7/547).

While the Qurʾān does not explicitly discuss sexual relations between men and the Ḥūr al-ʿĪn, commentaries on the Qurʾān and traditions about them go into some detail about this matter (for example, see al-Ṭabarī, 23/22; al-Ṭūsī, 8/467; al-Suyūṭī, Kitāb al-Īḍāḥ fī ʿilm al-nikāḥ, cited by Bouhdiba, 75–76) and enumerate their attractive features, such as their supernatural translucency that means their bone marrow is visible (al-Dārimī, 2/336; al-Bukhārī, 4/88; al-Ikhtiṣāṣ, 351; for one explanation of the striking translucency of the bodies of the Houris, see Schuon, 185). The topic of the Ḥūr al-ʿĪn provoked many questions in the early period of Islam, to the extent that, in response to a question from one of his own wives, the Prophet Muḥammad compared the status of the best women of this world to that of the Ḥūr al-ʿĪn, meaning the women of the hereafter (see al-Ṭabarānī, 23/368; Ibn Bābawayh, 3/469).

Even though the question of sexual relations with the otherworldly Ḥūr al-ʿĪn appears to have attracted the attention of early orientalists (for example, see Horovitz, 543; Berthels, 263), in Islamic mystical thought the Ḥūr al-ʿĪn represent a transcendental beauty that is without value if it does not lead to union with God: to be in love with the image of beauty manifested in these other-worldly women of paradise is to incur Divine jealousy. Houris and palaces may be what people long for as the fruit of their actions, but the mystic or friend of God is free from desiring rewards and is completely taken up with vision of God. At the same time, the ḥūr al-ʿīn represent a purity that is only accessible to the purified eye of the lover’s heart (Rūmī, Kulliyyāt, 1/430; Mathnawī, 3/3033, 6/3646; Maybudī, English trans. 5, 57, 67). Some authors emphasise the number seventy in relation to the ḥūr al-ʿīn, reflecting the abjad value of the letter ʿayn (for example, al-Suyūṭī, cited by Bouhdiba, 75). In his commentary on Q 44:54, the Jalwatī shaykh Ismāʿīl Ḥaqqī al-Bursawī not only relates ḥūr to the meaning of ‘whiteness’ and al-ʿīn to ‘the largeness of the eyes’, stressing the idea of the maidens’ purity (ṣafāʾ), but he also links the mention of ḥūr al-ʿīn to the teachings of the head of the order Muḥammad Üftāde (d. 988/1580) that ‘the ruling properties of the Sharīʿa will never be removed entirely, so that some of them still apply in the hereafter, even though that is not the abode of obligations (taklīf)… this is why God says “pure maidens [of paradise] restricted within tented pavilions” (ḥūr maqṣūrāt fī al-khiyām, Q 55:72, a phrase denoting that they only belong to their husbands and are well guarded within their dwellings) (5/519). More recent Islamic scholars have also developed a different understanding of the Ḥūr al-ʿĪn that is critical of the carnal view, and in doing so, have argued that the traditions that assign copious numbers of Ḥūr al-ʿĪn for each man are, in fact, unreliable forgeries, while some have questioned whether the term should only be applied to females, since the singular of ḥūr has two versions and can be applied to a man (aḥwar) or to a woman (hawrāʾ) (Riḍā, 1/234).
